The north has a strong influence fron Quechua and Aymara cultures which is reflected in their dance. The 'Cueca' is the national dance of Chile originating in 1824, it was the 1950s that seen the beginning of folk music raising up again that saw famous artists such as Violeta Parra.

Their music was more focused on spreading the word of folk music rather than sending political messages. It was in the 1960s onwards that the new Chilean song was introduced with influence coming from artists such as Atahualpa Yupanqui.
